While I was browsing through a back issue of an international mens fashion magazine, I fell in love instantly, and no, not with the male models that graced the pages. As hot as they were, the only thing that grabbed my attention were the high waist trousers that the male models were wearing. Fashion houses Lanvin and Rick Owens sent their male models down the runway in grey, brown and black high waisted trousers during the fall 2012 shows. They teamed their pants with an oversized grey sweater that would be perfect for fall/winter. For spring/summer one could easily pair the pants with a white fitted t-shirt or a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a pair of brogues. Musician and blogger, Lanre Aluko, blogged two years ago on his blog “The essence of style” about the moment he fell in love with high waisted trousers and made his own pair from pants that he had bought from international retailer River Island. The high waisted trouser made their film debut in Spike Jonze’s Her which is set in the not so distant future, where the leads character portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix and his co-stars were sporting the trousers. The fact that the movie is set in the future could be foreshadowing on the part of the costume designers on the direction that men’s fashion is going in I could not help but wonder is this where fashion was going and if so I am happy to go along for the ride. As I looked online, I fell deeper in love with high waisted trousers. They not only add a classy element to any outfit but once you wear them you are bound to stand out from the crowd. I fully intend on having a few designed just for me.
