My Natural Hair

Image
A Multicultural Revival In Natural Hair Care Creator & brand ambassador of My Natural Hair, Catherine Williams started her hair journey like so many other young African women; being traumatized through time-consuming processes which included painful brushing, chemical laden relaxants and socially “ redefined ” norms. As South African Black consumers continue to embrace the natural hair movement, its impact is greatly shaping the haircare market. The sales of all styling products, shampoos, conditioners & oils have increased enormously, with the desire for healthy products leading the way. The “ ethnic ” haircare industry has undergone quite a transformation over the past years and that should continue heading into the next decade. As more and more consumers are embracing their natural self and walking away from harsh hair treatments, it is presenting opportunities for natural brands to enter the market. Research indicates that wearing natural ha...

The Great Zambezi Exhibition

Image
CELEBRATING THE BEAUTY OF NATURE Flocks of brightly-coloured birds and an abundance of wildlife - which includes hippos, elephants, black rhinos, wild dogs, cheetah and lions - can be found around the Zambezi River. And it’s this diversity of fauna and flora which has inspired Ardmore Ceramic Art’s ‘The Great Zambezi’ exhibition, which will be staged at The Cellars–Hohenort in Cape Town from February 17 to February 19. Running through parts of Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – birthplace of Ardmore founder, Fée Halsted – the river and its fauna and flora have been imaginatively realised in ceramics featuring hippos ridden by local people, elephants and crocodiles which evoke memories of the stories of Rudyard Kipling and Rider Haggard, troops of vervet monkeys chattering in the forest canopy and Flame Lilies and Scadoxis flowers interacting with colourful Narina Trogans and Angolan Pita birds. For those interested in adding something s...

PUMA COLLABORATES WITH LOCAL DESIGNER DANIEL TING CHONG Global Sports Brand PUMA has collaborated with local designer Daniel Ting Chong to create two new sneaker iterations; a vintage Duplex OG and a modernized version of it, the Duplex Evo. Who is Daniel Ting Chong? The Cape Town based illustrator and designer has created two distinctly African sneakers, by drawing on traditional indigenous Zulu and Xhosa beliefs. What inspired the designs and the process? Chong’s design of the earthy hued Duplex OG (R2 899) was inspired by Unkulunkulu, the Supreme Creator in traditional Zulu culture. The perforated upper consists of a premium nubuck suede completed by a debossed artwork of Unkulunkulu on the tongue. The heelcap embraces a custom typographic PUMA logo, which has been specifically created for this release. Notably, it is rare for PUMA to release a sneaker without their iconic typographic logo. Reference to Unkulunkulu continues in the design of the unique footbeds, with...
