My Natural Hair launch

PoseZA attended the launch for My Natural Hair last week at the Bungalow Restaurant in Camps Bay were we talking and laughed about our natural hair journey. An intimate event for natural hair movement from all races. A Multicultural Revival In Natural Hair Care.

Creator & brand ambassador of My Natural Hair, Catherine Williams started her hair journey like so many other young African women; being traumatized through time-consuming processes which included painful brushing, chemical laden relaxants and socially “redefined” norms.

As South African Black consumers continue to embrace the natural hair movement, its impact is greatly shaping the haircare market. The sales of all styling products, shampoos, conditioners & oils have increased enormously, with the desire for healthy products leading the way.
The “ethnic” haircare industry has undergone quite a transformation over the past years and that should continue heading into the next decade. As more and more consumers are embracing their natural self and walking away from harsh hair treatments, it is presenting opportunities for natural brands to enter the market.
Research indicates that wearing natural hair makes women feel liberated, confident and different from others, giving them a tremendous sense of pride & natural beauty.

Catherine became increasingly dissatisfied with the lack of products that enhance natural hair & stepped out in her own entrepreneurial pursuits. When asked about her motivation to start the line, Williams says, " As a self-confessed global connoisseur of every available product range for textured Afro, ethnic or curly hair; I couldn’t understand how there were no local ranges for African women to choose from.

After 2 years of development, My natural Hair was launched in October 2016. It’s the first SA retail range of its kind. The aim is to change the “multicultural” women’s hair choices and experience, while not compromising on the quality of the ingredients they put on their tresses. The range is free of any sulphates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil and petroleum.

Instead the products are infused with natural goodness. The nourishing shampoo, hydrating conditioner and a hair strengthening oil contain jojoba, coconut, sweet almond, grape seed, castor, olive, avocado and sunflower oil as well as shea butter.

Each product is balanced & gentle, resulting in healthier looking hair. It’s  an authentically natural solution that epitomizes strong values & an important emotional connection with its consumers.

Not only has Catherine become a sassy corporate player; she is championing the “natural hair” appeal to other women through her range of unique natural products.
Educational campaigns and workshops will complement the strong messages that My Natural Hair is already sharing with its techno savvy target market via social media channels.

As a personal preference Catherine wants to work with teenage girls & young women. She believes it is then that their identities are challenged & their hair forms part of their identity, particularly in South Africa.

I noticed a need to offer women a choice in their hair care products; through reestablishing credibility in the term "natural." As women of color, we have historically allowed the very loose use of the term "beautiful” in our hair desription terms, suggesting that extensions, wigs and straigteners are desirable. Our message is that it’s ok to go “natural”, breaking through the standard view on beauty while harnessing women’s right to be unapogetically themselves”, encourages Catherine.
